Every student is paired with like-minded musicians in a chamber music ensemble guided by a mentor. Collaborating with faculty in rehearsals all week is the true key to development. Time allows for ideas, muscles, breath, and sleep to integrate and inspire!
Throughout the week, students will integrate the physical and cognitive aspects of collaborative performance, providing them with valuable understanding in communication, listening, movement, breathing, intention, creativity, and perseverance.
Educational activities and nourishing snacks are included each day to support the experience.
Playing alongside professional musicians in a chamber music setting gives the opportunity of hands-on experience, improving artistic skill and nurturing key aspects of the human experience; communicating, sharing, planning, and executing. Family and friends are always welcome to attend the final concert, where students will exercise their development of performing in every sense of the word.
“Dr. Johnathan Spence has an energy that is contagious. His knowledge, joy, and love of music is equalled only by his determination to share music with everyone through teaching and performing. He challenges every student, giving them the tools and confidence needed to play to the next level. My daughter, Gabrielle, spent four years as his student. The skills she has gained over the years from Chamber Music Week and private lessons has allowed her to continue her musical journey into college. She has blossomed into a strong, confident violin player and is able to conquer any piece of music.” -Sara C.
"I want to do it again! I love the collaboration and teamwork involved in chamber music. I like learning from different teachers and meeting other students. I feel like I gained a better understanding of how to balance listening to other parts and my own and how to listen to the music all together."
"I gained a lot more confidence in myself, specifically my leading. I also learned a lot about different kinds of sounds I can make and a deeper love to chamber music."
